Bill's love of families

James Coleman's "Residing with Bill" reminded me of many times Bill spoke fondly of the Coleman family and of his joy at spnding time with them.  The only time I visited the Colemans of Connecticut was when I was visiting Bill in Boston in the 1970's.  Although I had not seen the Colemans for 5 or 6 years, they treated me like family.  (Apparently, my being there with the Bear enhanced my status.)

When he lived in Chicago, Bill was Uncle Bear to our children by virtue of his visits to our Milwaukee home for baseball games, state park trips, cultural events ... During those years, Bear was also close to a brother to me.  He helped me with yardwork and house projects.  He listened patiently to my complaints about the agonies of serving as a bureaucrat when I worked in state service.

Throughout our correspondence in the years between Chicago and Canada, Bear affirmed my faith in my own family.  When we visited Canada in 2014 and 2016, Bill and Cristina and Cristina's mother all made us feel as parts of their family.
