Barbara Baxter
It was my honor to keep you in "protective custody", as you so put it. I am filled with many emotions ... of pride and sorrow at this time for our family's loss. I thank you for being my father and I miss you. Love always, Barbara.

Sabrina (& Dave) Hall: Grand-daughter, Nicola & Jacob Hall: Great-grandchildren
My grandfather was a gentle, kind, and dedicated soul. He committed his life to the study, practice and advancement of Otolaryngology. From a grand-daughter's perspective, my fondest memories of him begin with our trips to Florida. I remember going on long walks with Grampy early in the morning on the sand dunes, finding all sorts of treasures, and collecting sand dollars to bring back for the rest of the family to see. Experiences like that fostered my curiosity in the natural world and led to a specialization at the university level in the biological sciences. I pursued my M.Sc. in Biology, and he was one of my biggest champions. There were likely about 10 people in the world that read my entire thesis from cover to cover, and he was one of them. We've been blessed to have great-grandparents in the lives of our children, Nicola and Jacob.

Nader Sadeghi, MDCM, FRCSC Professor and Chairman Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery McGill University
I had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Baxter during my residency training at McGill in 1994. At the time he had stepped down as chair of the department. However, he continued his medical mission to northern Canada. He took me along to one of his medical trips to Iqaluit. This was part of our training on the health of the northern communities of Canada. Until then I only new Jim Baxter as the imposing long time leader of the department for 20 years. The trip allowed me to know Jim not only as a physician and a healer for his patients, the type that you want to emulate, but also for the fatherly figure he was for the young trainees like myself. I will never forget when meeting him for the dinner at the hotel lobby after a long day of work at the Iqaluit hospital, the first thing he would ask me was, "young man, did you call your wife before coming down for dinner?" For me as a newly married young trainee he was just as concerned about my family well being as my training. I was honored to deliver the James D Baxter lecture many years later at his presence. He memory will stay alive for ever at McGill community of Otolaryngology- Head and Surgery.
