Passed away at his home in Burlington, with his loving family by his side, on Monday, March 13, 2017, in his 94th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Dorothy for 70 years. Loving father of Ann Baumgartl (Peter) and Barbara Baxter (Donald). Proud grandfather of Sabrina Hall (David), Kimberley Baumgartl (Jamie Matthews), James "Jay" Baumgartl, Amanda Baxter, Jessica Baxter (Michael King) and Ashley Baxter, and cherished great-grandfather of Nicola, Jacob, Mikayla, Aiden, Damien and Owen. Predeceased by sisters "Bunty" Margaret House (Alfonso) and Gladys Templeton (James).

Dr. Baxter was an educator and an otolaryngologist. He was an Emeritus Professor at McGill University and the Chairman for the Dept. of Otolaryngology from 1970-89 as well as Otolaryngology in Chief at both the Royal Victoria and Montreal General Hospitals. His research took him to Baffin Island where he developed treatment programs for ear disease and hearing loss in the Inuit population in the Canadian Arctic under the auspices of the McGill Baffin program (1972-1997). He headed the CPHA Task Force on the Health Effects of the increased Flying Activity in the Labrador area between 1985-87. He was awarded the Canada 125 Medal in 1992; the J.A. Hildes Medal in Circumpolar Health in 1996 and was author and co-author of numerous articles, papers and reports. He dedicated his career to the advancement of Oto-Rhino-Laryngol. & Broncho-Esophagol. – Head & Neck surgery with many other accomplishments that are numerous.

Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 3-5 p.m. where a Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. For those who wish, donations in memory of Jim to McGill University Dept. of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
