Visiting Aunt Stella and Uncle Walter was a guarantee of a very strong beverage [one ounce] or more, then a large and hearty meal. Immediate family around the table and Aunt Stella saying ‘eat some more!’
Initially, I met Aunt Stella at our wedding, in Winnipeg, July 3, 1965. Following summer, Dan and I, along with Mary and Frank Ostryznik, drove to Ontario and stayed at the Wilk’s home on Beach Boulevard. First morning there, Dan and I were offered a shot of whiskey, one dozen eggs and a pound of bacon for breakfast. Wow…. What a memory … still talked about today – 50 years later.
Aunt Stella valued family time and special occasions. She and Aunt Nellie traveled to Saskatoon for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was obvious the sisters enjoyed one another’s company and we theirs.
I’ve heard stories of the Ostryznik family from Winnipeg driving to Ontario every second summer to visit with the Ostryznick’s, Wilk’s and Novak’s. Memories of riding horses, playing with cousins. Eating fresh cherries, gooseberries, drinking farm milk and, of course, enjoying pyrogy, cabbage rolls, city chicken and an assortment of desserts, followed by beverages.
Thanks for the memories Aunt Stella. Each member of the family have their own special recollections which will be shared for generations to come.
Peace be with your family.
Much love,
Marilyn and Dan Ostryznik
