Tim Shier and Family

Even after all the many trips out of starting gates, and slightly fewer finish gates, in my life I very fondly remember many when I was a young racer at MHRC. I remember one very cold day of Christmas Camp, one of those days when the wind would blow ice balls, seemingly from the 401,up the old starting ramp into the faces of the racers and Doug the Starter. We had to race in shifts so we wouldn't get too cold. After my run,( which was probably a lot faster than Sumos), I was encouraged to go back up and give Doug a cup of hot mulled cider, to help keep him warm. Up the old T-Bar I went and gave him the cup of cider. When I passed the cup to Doug, initially he was happy to have a warm drink, then as I got to the bottom of the ramp, I heard a loud @#$&*%$, and looked back up to see the problem. The cider was too hot for his hands so he took his toque (may have been the only time he had one??) and held the cider with his toque so not to burn his hands. "Thanks Timmy" he shouted out of the booth, no gloves, no hat, and his toque being used as a cider cozy. As a young racer, I didn't understand his reasoning, to sacrifice a warm head for a drink of mulled cider. It was when I started coaching that I was informed by Doug that the racers drink mulled cider and everyone else drinks mulled wine!!! I wonder still if he was upset because the drink was too hot, or that I brought him a kids drink?? I look back on those years very fondly and Doug was a big reason for that. My sympathy to the Robb Family.
