Obituary for Barbara Gillmore

Barbara Gillmore
GILLMORE, Barbara Irene - Barbara Irene (nee Tidman) Gillmore of Burlington went to be with the Lord on Monday June 7, 2010, in her 86th year. She was the beloved wife of the late John Gillmore (May 26, 2004) and much loved mother of Heather, Kathie, and Ron and his wife Karen; grandmother of Kimberly (Bill), David, Lennea (Tim), and Matthew; great-grandmother of Ashley, T.J., Savannah, Caitlin and Bridget; sister of Joyce Halen (Hamilton and son Chris) and Jean Jackson (Tony), and John's brother Bing Gillmore (Jean) and family; aunt of Susan Losey (Jeff) and family. She will be greatly missed by these and her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her "adopted" family Bim White (Shirley), Sue Rohr (Doug), and Jane Sergi. Barbara was born in Winthrop MA, on July 7, 1924, to Vera Doris Tidman and her husband William Young Tidman. When she was 12 the family moved back to the Tidmans' home country of England, settling in London. Barbara attended secretarial college and found work with the American Embassy in London. During WWII she met her future husband, John Gillmore, while visiting hospitalized Allied soldiers with her mother. John went back to the front in his capacity as a bomber pilot and the two continued their correspondence. During a 5-day leave in 1944, John proposed to Barbara and she accepted. They were married November 6, 1944, before his leave was over. After the war, Barbara followed her new husband to Canada with many other war brides on a ship, and remained friends with several of them throughout her life. When she first moved to Canada, she lived in Picardville, AB, with John's parents until he could join her. John continued his career as a pilot with the Canadian Air Force (later the Armed Forces), which meant frequent moves for the couple and their growing family. Over the years, they lived in Edmonton AB, Burnaby BC, White Horse, YT, Ottawa and North Bay ON, Bracknell England, Richmond Hill and Downsview ON, Colorado Springs CO, Chambly, St. Bruno, and St. Hubert QC. When John retired they went to Europe for 6 weeks, and settled in Burlington upon their return in 1973. Barbara attended Appleby United Church for a while with John, but found her true church home with Burlington Alliance Church, where she was very active for many years as the head of their prayer chain, as a greeter, and with the pastor's prayer group. Her Christian calling was a turning point in her life. She had a busy and satisfying family life with relatives both nearby and far-flung.As she walked through life alongside John, the love of her life, one of her greatest joys was watching her grandchildren grow. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Hamilton General Hospital, who took care of Barbara in her last days with such compassion and tenderness. They would also like to thank the front-line workers at CAMA Woodlands and 5 West at Joseph Brant Hospital for their dedication and compassion. Cremation has taken place; in accordance to Barbara's wishes her ashes will be mingled with her beloved John's. Visitation at BURLINGTON ALLIANCE CHURCH, 4457 New Street, Burlington on Monday, June 21 from 7-8:30 p.m.; a Celebration of Barbara's Life will be held on Tuesday, June 22 at 1 p.m. at the same address. If desired, expressions of sympathy to the Red Cross or World Vision would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
