Dickson, Gordon Elford

Died Monday, January 19, 2015 surrounded by the love of family and friends and supported by caring people. Beloved husband of Sheilah for 44 years. Proud and loving Father of Kevin and his wife Kelly of Orleans; and Craig and his wife Nichola of Coquitlam. Grandpa Gord to three beautiful little boys, Ronan, Arran and Bradley. Dear brother of Barbara Elves of Calgary and uncle to Rick (Leslie); Ron; Joanne (Jeff) and their families. Brother-in-law of Ross Mackenzie and his wife Linda of N.S. and uncle to Christopher (Robyn); Jennifer (Keith) and their family. He is predeceased by his parents, Eva and Elford Dickson and brother-in-law Don Elves. Gord was born and raised in Calgary and Claresholm, Alberta. He attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on an Athletic Scholarship and obtained his Master’s Degree at New York University. Running was his passion. He promised his Mother that when he graduated he would return to Canada. He moved to Hamilton and ran with distinction for the Hamilton Olympic Club, and later the Hamilton Athletic Club. He competed internationally for Canada several times including: Pan Am Games 1959, 3rd in the marathon; Boston Marathon 1959, 3rd; and was a 5 time winner of the Hamilton Round the Bay Race. He is a member of the Canadian Olympic Club, Rome 1960; the Canadian Road Running Hall of Fame, 1991; and the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame, 2008. He actively coached runners from Burlington, Hamilton, Mississauga and Kenya. A long time resident of Burlington and a retired Asst. Superintendent of Business with the Halton Board of Education, Gord was a devoted family man and friend with a keen intellect and a great sense of humour. Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 3-5 and 7-9p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 1p.m. For those who wish, donations to ‘Right to Play’, or the Joseph Brant Hospital would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. Forever in our hearts.
