I learned only recently of John's death and regret the delay in responding. I was the first student to get a PhD under his guidance, starting with him in 1960, at the beginning of his academic career. We kept in touch over the years and I was able to visit him and Erna several times up until the 1980's. We went on a canoeing expedition together in 1977, along the French River, with present and former students and colleagues, which revealed another facet of his life. More recently, in the early '90's, he came to Texas on a lecture tour and spent a couple of days with us in Houston. That was the last time that I saw him. I owe him a great debt for his kindness and patience throughout my time with him, and since.
