Memories of Peter from Michael Hayes

Dear Lenore, It was with great sorrow that I have just learned of Peter's passing today. I am very sorry that I have failed to keep in touch with you over the many years since we worked together at American Can in Hamilton. Lynne and I both very much enjoyed the social occasions that we spent together. My 40th birthday party you might possibly remember, even though it was 25 years ago, was a very special surprise as Lynne invited you both and some of our good pals from Stelco Jim and Cathy Wellwood and Dave Margo from Alcoa and his girlfriend Catherine to our house in Nobleton. I always treasured my relationship with Peter as he taught me a lot early in my career and I always trusted him as a kind and generous friend who always looked upon me as one of his own. One thing Peter gave me that I still have was a personal letter he wrote me when he retired. It was typical of Peter, kind and thoughtful. I re-read it every few years and I think of him. I have tried to remember some of the best characteristics of some of the finest people I have worked with in my career and to pass good advice on to some of those that follow. Peter did this for me. I'm now Vice President of Operations for Blue Giant Equipment in Brampton and I remember most of my early lessons from my American Can days. How to treat people properly with care and respect was an important lesson I learned then and tried never to forget. I was thinking fondly of the past of you both today and some wonderful memories. I would have dearly wanted to be with you in December and I'm sorry. With warmest regards Michael and Lynne Hayes 32 Kaake Road Nobleton ON L0G1N0 905-859-0542 February 3rd 2014
