Obituary for Mary Ellen Reed

Mary Ellen Reed
REED, Mary Ellen-
Peacefully with family at her side at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington, on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, Mary (nee Henderson) Reed of Burlington in her 76th year. Beloved mother of Rick and his wife Susan Galea, and Patsy and her husband Rod Smith, all of Toronto. Cherished grandmother of Emily, Claire, Laura, Kate and Madeleine. Dear sister of John Henderson and his wife Nancy of Calgary and David Henderson and his wife Karin of Maple Ridge, B.C. Mary grew up in the Town of Mount Royal, enjoying skating at the Mount Royal community rink in the winters and spending summers with her family at their cottage on Boyd Lake in the Laurentian Mountains, near Dunany. Mary graduated from the Town of Mount Royal High School in 1952, and continued her education at McGill University, where she graduated in 1956 with a BSc degree in biochemistry. During summers at university, Mary was enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force University Reserve Training Program, and while there, achieved the rank of Pilot Officer. While stationed in England on the URTP program, she met her husband-to-be, Don Reed. After marrying, Mary and Don lived in Montreal and later in the Vancouver area where they began raising their family, eventually settling in Burlington. In addition to being a devoted mother and homemaker, Mary enjoyed international travel, both on family vacations and on frequent working trips with Don. After Mary and Don went their separate ways in 1988, she grew into her new life as an independent woman with a career with McMaster University and Statistics Canada, and a home of her own. She was a dedicated volunteer, serving for 25 years on the Joseph Brant Hospital Auxiliary. In 2003 she was honoured with a Provincial Life Membership to the Hospital Auxiliary Association of Ontario. The family extends sincere gratitude to Mary's many friends in the Hospital Auxiliary and the Lakewinds Condominium for their kind support. Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333) on Sunday 3-5 p.m., where funeral service will be held on Monday December 6, at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at Smith's Funeral Home. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Burlington. If desired in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Joseph Brant Hospital Auction Committee.
