Obituary for John Wright

John Wright
Those who knew him say he was always a gentleman, and, like the Cheshire cat, the warmth of his smile lasted long after he left the room. John Wright, P. Eng., MID, former Systems Planning Engineer for North York Hydro, who designed the original electrical supply for Flemingdon Park, Yorkdale Mall and Fairview Mall, has died. He was 91. John Wright was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, in 1918, a fraternal twin and one of six children of John and Laura Emily Wright. He is survived by his brother Ronald and sister Sybil. He spent five years in the Royal Signals during World War II, was mentioned in dispatches and earned the rank of Sergeant Major before returning to the Potteries. There he met Ethel Davenport, a nurse and his future wife of 62 years. John's love of a challenge and desire for a better life led to immigration to Canada with Ethel and their first child, Judith. Their second daughter Pippa arrived in 1959 and son Stewart followed in 1962. In 1968, colleagues and friends joined to celebrate John's iron ring. He retired from Hydro after 23 years in 1983 and in 1986, he and Ethel moved to Burlington, Ontario, where they focused on family, taking an active part in the lives of their two grandchildren, Roshan John Chopra, and Hannah Daphne Wright. Ethel, Judith, Rajeev, Roshan, Pippa, Stewart, Shirley and Hannah, the Holdcrofts, the Davenports and all of those who once basked in his famous smile, will miss him more than words can express. Visitation at Billings Court Manor, 3700 Billings Court, Burlington on Thursday at 3 p.m. A celebration of John's life will be held at St. Christopher's Anglican Church, 662 Guelph Line, Burlington, on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Private cremation to follow. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to Hamilton General Heart investigation Unit or Plan Canada would be appreciated by the family.
