Obituary for James Ross "Jim" Panes

September 10, 1935 - November 26, 2016

The family is very saddened to announce the passing of Jim at Shalom Manor after a long struggle with Alzheimers Disease. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan Panes. He will be sorely missed by his daughters, Sharon Carlton(Stephen) of Calgary, Alberta and Kathie Scherff (Chris) of Tempe, Arizona and his grandchildren, Kevin, Kristen and Joshua Carlton. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Rowett (Glen); sisters-in-law, Joan Panes and Marie Panes and several cousins, nieces and nephews . Pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Panes; brother, William Panes and brother Robert Panes. Jim was born in East York, Ontario. He graduated from Ryerson Institute of Technology in 1961 as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist. He worked for 40 years at Stelco and retired in 2000. Jim was a member of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps where he served as a Major. Jim was a gentle, loving husband and father and adored his grandchildren. Jim loved to sing and was an active member of the Knights of Harmony Barbershop Chorus for 30 years. He enjoyed his association with PROBUS and his weekly euchre group at Trinity United Church. Jim was a passionate cross-word puzzler and spent hours at the computer working on his secret invention. The family wishes to express their most sincere appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at Sunrise Court, Shalom Manor for their kindness and compassionate care of Jim and his family. A very special thank you also to dear friend, John Murphy for his many years of loyalty and support. Visitation at STONEHOUSE-WHITCOMB FUNERAL HOME, 11 Mountain Street, GRIMSBY (905-945-2755) on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Trinity United Church, 100 Main Street West, Grimsby on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 1 pm. Interment to follow Queen's Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.
