Obituary for James John Maher

James John Maher
MAHER, James John “Jim” (January 26, 1939 – February 7, 2017)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James John Maher (Jim), on Tuesday Feb. 7, comforted and surrounded by family at Joseph Brant Hospital. Beloved husband of Anne (nee Garnich) for over 53 years. Dearest father of Mike (Katie, Nigel, Megan), Joe (Mary Lynn), Sue (Piero), Cath (Doug), Trish (Bruno) and Rob. Treasured brother of Patrick. Loving Papa of Madeline and Aileen, and proudest dog grandpa to Coco.

Jim will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, committed friend and passionate educator “If you are living you should be learning!” As a devoted lifelong learner, he earned his Teaching Certificate from the Hamilton Teacher’s College, his B.A. from McMaster University, his Master of Education and Supervisory Officer’s Certificate from the University of Toronto, and his Master of Psychology from Niagara University. Although Jim detoured from completing the PhD he began in Education, his family believe he did achieve a PhD in generosity and compassion.

Jim worked for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board for over 32 years. After several years as a classroom teacher and the President of the Local OECTA, he moved into Administration as Vice-Principal at Holy Family School, and then Principal at: Corpus Christi, St. Augustine, St. Joan of Arc, St. Bernard, St. Anne, and St. Michael schools.

Special thanks to all the physicians and health care professionals that have provided support and care to both Jim, and his family, over the past decade.

All family and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 2016 Blairholm Ave. Burlington, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00am. Reception to follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or charity of your choice, would be appreciated.

“Happy trails to you, until we meet again…”

“Onward to victory!”
