Obituary for Helen Mc Leish Amos (Stewart)

Helen Mc Leish Amos (Stewart)
AMOS, Helen Mc Leish (1918-2016)

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Helen McLeish Amos, in her 98th year, on Feb. 11th, 2016 after a brief illness at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Dear wife of the late Malcolm Frederick Amos (2010). Cherished Mother of Malcolm (Cathie) and Ian (Kelly). Loving grandmother of Nicole and Taylor.

Helen was an active member and volunteer in the Burlington, ON, community. She was a member of the Weaver’s Guild and actively campaigned and was part of the board responsible for the founding and building of the Burlington Cultural Centre, which established a home for the Arts. As a young woman, Helen had travelled to Europe just prior to the breakout of World War II, and took pictures of the coast on the last ship allowed out before fighting began. These pictures were later used by the Canadian Military in planning of the D-Day invasion. Helen also became a laboratory technician during the war, a job previously held primarily by men, and worked in a Toronto hospital and in the Sault Ste. Marie Abititbi Pulp & Paper Mill, where she met Fred Amos, her future husband, and father to her two boys, Malcolm and Ian. Helen & Fred loved to travel and visited over 30 countries, some for extended periods of time. Helen loved music and was a talented pianist. She also enjoyed sewing and making all kinds of crafts.

For the last 2 years Helen has lived at Sunrise Senior Living in Oakville, and we would like to thank the staff there for all their care and kindness.

Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON, (905-632-3333), on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 12:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 pm. Reception after Service. For those who wish, donations in memory of Helen may be given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
