Merkis, Evelyn (nee Byrne)
Passed away peacefully at Billing Court Manor, Burlington, on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at the age of 89. Beloved wife of the late Henryk Merkis. Loving and devoted mother of Witold Merkis (Victoria), Stephen Merkis, the late Barbara Merkis, Helen Merkis (Don Grennan), Diane Abu Salim (Wa’el), and the late Ruth Merkis-Hunt (Adam). Proud grandmother of Christina Merkis, Elisabeth Merkis, Alexander Merkis (Liz Shepherd), Stephanie Churma, Michael Stewart, Daniel Stewart, Michael Abu Salim, Matthew Dye, Rachael Dye and Nicholas Dye. Delighted Great-grandmother of Beau and Kayden. Evelyn will be dearly missed by her sister Marie Mooney. A special thank you to Evelyn’s niece, Louise Mooney, who was always a constant and loving support for Evelyn.
The family would also like to extend a sincere thank you to the teams at both Waterdown Manor and Billings Court Manor. We are so grateful for the compassionate care Evelyn received. A special thank you to Janet, Azra and Linda at Billings Court who supported Evelyn in her final years.
Evelyn was a devote Catholic and very involved in the church. She was the church bookkeeper, first at Holy Rosary and then at St. Andrew’s, for over 25 years. She loved music, and that love led her to be a member of the Holy Rosary Choir and the Hamilton Diocesan Choir. Singing Midnight Mass at the Cathedral was always a highlight of her year. She was also a lector and a member of the Holy Rosary C.W.L. for many years.
Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 287 Plains Rd. E., Burlington, on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 10 a.m. with reception to follow in the church hall. For those who wish, memorial contributions in memory of Evelyn to Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
