Obituary for Ethel Abell

Ethel Abell
Abell, Ethel M. (nee Mitchell), passed peacefully at Hampton Terrace Care Centre, in Burlington, Ontario on Friday, March 25, 2011, in her 95th year. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Jack Abell in 2001, and by her five siblings. Loving mother of daughter Linda Graham (Bruce) of Chicago, Illinois, and son William (Bill) Abell of Elmira, Ontario. Cherished grandmother of Beth Graham, Waterford, Michigan, and Todd Graham (Piper) of San Francisco, California. Proud great-grandmother of Ellen Margaret LaGrelius Graham of San Francisco.

Ethel was born in Toronto and attended North Toronto Collegiate and Shaw's Business College. She met her future husband, Jack, in a tennis tournament and they were married in 1943. They lived the early years of their marriage in Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton.

For six years, Ethel, Jack, and their two children, Linda and Bill, lived in Doncaster, England, where Ethel was introduced to the game of golf and became the only Canadian member of the Inner Wheel, a women's service club connected to the Rotary Club.

Upon returning to Canada in 1960, the family settled in Burlington, where Ethel and Jack were active members of Port Nelson United Church, and enjoyed their family's summer home in Bala, on Lake Muskoka. Upon Jack's retirement in 1977, he and Ethel spent summers in Bala, and then Bracebridge, in Muskoka, and their winters in Port Charlotte, Florida. In Bracebridge, Ethel was active in her church, delivered Meals on Wheels, played golf, and was an avid bridge-player. In 1991, she and Jack moved back to Burlington as their permanent residence, where Ethel lived until her passing.

Cremation has taken place. A Service of Remembrance will be celebrated at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, expressions of sympathy, to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Our heartfelt thanks to all the nurses and staff at Hampton Terrace for the devoted and loving care given to Ethel.
