Obituary for David Frederick Martin

MARTIN, David Frederick

Born December 28, 1933. Passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 3, 2015. Loyal husband, champion and love of her life to Elizabeth (Perry). Devoted father and protector to Leslie, Laurie, and his other children Steve Scott, Glenn Seymour, Nicole Durrant, Lisa Askin, John Spring, Drew and Ben Donohue, and Debbie Powell. Faithful brother to his gracious sister Jean Batchelor (Bill), and his brother-in-law Don Perry (Jane). Loving son of the late David & Ellen Martin of Toronto & Keswick. Sadly missed by his devoted nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Toronto, he made Burlington home for almost 50 years in the house he & Liz built in 1967. Dave had a storied career in television, from learning the business in the early days at CHCH TV to getting Global on the air, to his distinguished time at CBC where his union, Olympic & HNIC negotiations would be the stuff of legend, were they but known.

Dave had a number of interests and activities outside of work. For many years he was an avid collector of railroadiana, always hoping to have an extensive model railway set up to run through his basement.

He was Vice President (administration) of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra from 1969 to 1973, with Liz acting as Treasurer on the Women's Committee during the same period.

Dave was treasurer and business manager for the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band Inc. for the period 2001-2006. He was instrumental in the move to their new home at the Old Fire Hall Arts Centre in Ancaster. He was a tireless volunteer and even traveled to Europe with the band. A favourite memory was watching Dave conduct the band in concert doing a rendition of Stan Kenton's music. He never missed a beat!

Dave was the inaugural president of the Golden Horseshoe Chapter of the CBC Pensioner's National Association from 2006 through 2010. He remained active as immediate past president even under failing health. He was looking forward to the Chapter's 10th anniversary next year.

Ultimately, his family was his life's work. His quiet and unswerving devotion to his parents, sister, wife and children were second to no man.

The family wishes to thank the Care Partners PSWs for their loving attention, and Dr. Stewart Pugsley and Dr. Shelia Middlebrook and their staffs for their tender care.

Visitation will be held at the family home on Sunday, September 13, 2015 between 2 & 5 p.m. All are welcome. For details and directions please email the family at: davidmartinvisitation@yahoo.ca. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to The Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health: www.firh.ca/donations.html.
