Passed away suddenly at his home in Burlington, Ontario on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, Rick Foley at the age of 70. Beloved husband of Katherine (nee Robson) Foley, Loved father of Kyla Kumar (Kiran) and Michael Szymczyk (Laura). Cherished grandfather of Kingston, Karsten and Zoe. Loving son of Jennifer and the late Gilbert Foley. Dear brother of Bill (Rosemary) and Daniel (Lorraine), Patrick (Kelly), Jessica (Mike), Lisa (Mick). Beloved uncle to Jacqueline, David, Matthew, Christopher, Shelbi, Quinn, Evan, Wade, Andrea and Ava. One of the original 'Broad Street Bullies', Rick built an illustrious career as a defenseman with the National Hockey League including the Chicago Blackhawks ('70-'71), Philadelphia Flyers ('71-'72) and Detroit Red Wings ('73-'74) as well as numerous years in the Eastern, Western, American and Ontario Hockey Leagues. Rick accumulated well over 2,000 penalty minutes in his professional career and was typically the largest man on the ice. His most memorable career moment occurred on the evening of December 15, 1971 at Madison Square Garden with the Flyers, when Rick fought two players, Glen Sather and Jim Neilson simultaneously. Rick continued as an active member of the NHL Player's Alumni Association and devoted his time to supporting several local charitable organizations. He will be missed by friends across the globe. Private Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Rick's life will take place at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. Rick believed that every child has a 'right to play'. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
