Obituary for
Zirka Medwid
Zirka Medwid
October 28, 1949 – April 2, 2018
Zirka (Zoreslawa Roxolana) Medwid stepped into eternity to be with the Lord after and a long and courageous battle on April 2, 2018 with her son, Andy, and her sister, Roma at her bedside. Beloved daughter of the late Wolodymyr (Walter) and the late Olga (Hubicka) Medwid, cherished sister of Roma Medwid (Roman Wodzicki) and the adored idol of her son, Andy Medwid (Lynn Eyles). Zirka will be dearly missed by her three grandsons Owen, Cole and Elliott who cherished their beloved Baba. Markian, Bohdan (Corina Gavita) and Alexandra Michailuk will miss their one-of-a-kind chocha (aunt) who made the holidays so memorable!
Zirka was a Registered Nurse specializing in Forensic Mental Health nursing at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
Beginning in 1983 until her retirement 3 years ago, she was a valued and respected staff member of the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA). Using her considerable people skills, she represented registered nurses and other healthcare workers at their workplaces in the greater Toronto, Hamilton and Niagara regions. This work included the knowledge and the application of Ontario workplace laws that influence a healthcare worker’s daily workplace life.
Zirka’s friends were her second family and she cherished them all. The vigil at her bedside was testimony to the high regard in which they held her. There wasn’t one day when there wasn’t a friend or two or three sitting with her in the final stages of her five month journey with cancer. Zirka loved to entertain and held wonderful celebrations for family and friends. One thing we all agree on is that she did it her way and she left us all guessing at the outcome at each chapter of her life.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Lincoln Memorial Hospital and Mc Nally Hospice for their gentle care of Zirka. Nurses Andy and Mary-Anne, thank you for being two angels in Zirka’s last days. We will never forget you and pray that you continue to help others.
Friends and colleagues are invited to pay their respects at STONEHOUSE-WHITCOMB FUNERAL HOME, 11 Mountain Street, GRIMSBY (905-945-2755) on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Zirka’s wishes were to be buried in Montreal with her parents. Visitation in Montreal at Memoria Funeral Home on 3254 Bellechasse Avenue on Tuesday, April 10th from 2-5 and 7- 10pm. Panachyda will be at 8pm. Visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 9:00am. The funeral service and a celebration of Zirka’s life will be held at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church on Bellechasse and 10th Ave. beginning at 10:00am.
