Neither Bryce or I fit in very well in High School. And like social outcasts, we found odd things to do. One favorite thing was photographing old steam trains and and railway stations, and Lancaster bombers if we got lucky. Canadian Pacific used to run the occasional steam excursion pulled by #6061, their last operating stem engine, on a little used track that ran north from Hamilton. And it would stop and back up and steam past a wonderful old tain station in Carlisle. Even after we were out school, I would collect him in my old '51 Mk V Jaguar and drive up to see who could get the best pic.
I moved to North Carolina but every year, I'd drop by, show off the growing family, his mother would set us down at the battered kitchen table for milk and cookies like when I was a kid, and we would tell tales to my kids. They even believed some of them. Later, his drink choce shifted to me smuggling in Sam Adams beer.
I'm glad he died at home. And the Steam Museum will be a great place for a get-together. I'm on the verge of going to Africa and can't get up there. Hopefully I can get a picture or 2.
