Obituary for John Allen MacKay

John Allen MacKay
MACKAY, John Allen "Jack" 1928-2016

Sadly we announce the passing of Jack on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the age of 88, with his children and beloved wife of 60 years Irene (MacDonald) MacKay by his side. Loving father of Jillanne (Ken) Sutherland, Melanie MacKay and John (Jessica) MacKay. Cherished Papa of Heather (Mark) Innamorato, Brodie Sutherland, Andrew (Trish) Sutherland, Evan Sutherland and Glendon Sutherland, Laurel (Jeff) Forbes, Patrick Case, Jack and Ava MacKay. Great-grandfather of Ellis, Angus and Charlotte.

Jack was raised in Dundas by his parents John Hector and Annie Maude MacKay, with his four surviving sisters and has life long-long childhood friends he met at St. Paul's United Church.

After working on the Alaskan highway, Jack then started in construction with Tope Construction and spent the next 30 years as the owner of the Edland Building Systems, successfully completing innumerable projects throughout the Niagara Peninsula.

After marrying Irene and moving to Burlington, they raised their children with great love, always proud of their accomplishments in highland dance, canoeing, soccer, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and swimming, especially proud of being the dad of an Olympian. He loved spending time with friends and family playing bridge, board games, sing songs, hikes, canoeing, swimming at Slabtown, bocce, golf and, most of all, loved family get-togethers.

Jack was a Scout Leader, wood worker, 60 year member of Valley Lodge #100 A.F & A. M., one of the original members of the Rogues and a long-time member of the Roseland Club where he enjoyed tennis and a long fabulous social life.

In 2000 Jack & Irene moved to Thornbury, where they both found a community they loved, many new friendships and wonderful church that they joined. Here he was also a founding member of Probus club. This new home was not one they ever wanted to leave, because of the close friendships they had established, but, on moving back to Burlington, their old acquaintances were soon re-established.

A visitation will take place at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 6-9 pm. A Celebration of life will be held at Port Nelson United Church, 3132 South Drive, Burlington on Thursday, June 23 at 1:00 pm followed by a reception at the Roseland Park & Country Club, 3079 Princess Blvd, Burlington, ON.

For those who wish, donations in memory of Jack may be given to the Joseph Brant Hospital.
