Obituary for Yvette Hamel (nee LeBlanc)

HAMEL, Yvette

Passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at the age of 90. Beloved wife of the late Guy Hamel for 59 years. Loving mother of Suzanne (Tom Reilly), Louise (Jim Stacy), Marc (Patricia Ciprietti), Michelle (Kevin Hinchey), and Paul (Ruth Anne Creighton).

Born in St. Anselme, N.B., Yvette had a long and rich life. Her heritage was Acadian, and she was raised in New Brunswick. She studied nursing in Montreal and was practicing when she met and married Guy in Asbestos, Quebec. In the early years, Guy’s mining career took them to Venezuela, and Rhodesia. Eventually they settled first in Guelph and then in Mississauga where she became involved with church and various community volunteer activities.

She raised three girls and two boys. Once they were in high school, she took up a career at Sears in the accounting department, and also operated a window manufacturing company for a short period of time.

On retirement, her time was spent with the 13 grandchildren, babysitting, providing summer camp and making sure they were well supplied with treats. She is also survived by four great grandchildren.

She loved family foremost. Other passions included: keeping the family and friends supplied with brownies and other good desserts; cheering on the Blue jays, tennis players and Toronto Maple Leafs; avid fan of The Young and the Restless; gardening, bridge and jigsaw puzzles also dominated her retirement years.

She fostered and shared with us so many gifts and talents; we were lucky to have had her for so long.

Proud Mèmère of Adrian, Blake, Jasmine, Emily, Zachary, J.T., Nicole, Hannah, Hayley, Gabrielle, Luc, Natalie, and Matthew.

Cherished great-grandmother of Mira, Sylvie, Nève, and Peyton.

Dear sister of Germaine Goguen (George) and Lucille LeBlanc; and sister-in-law of Roger (Louise) Hamel.

Yvette’s strong presence and wit will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A special thank you to the staff at Joseph Brant Hospital and to all her family of caregivers at The Village of Tansley Woods for the excellent care and compassion over the last eight years.

A Memorial mass will be held at a later date.

For those who wish, a donation in memory of Yvette to the Alzheimer's Society of Halton, the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Hamel Family Foundation, a registered charitable foundation to continue Guy & Yvette’s charitable legacy would be sincerely appreciated.
