It is with saddened hearts that the family announces her passing on Dec. 16th, 2020 at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington. She is survived by her three children Peter [Debbie] of North Bay, Lynda [Fred] of Bribie Island, Australia, Susan [Barry] of Calabogie. Step- daughters Susan and Brenda [Rick] Ryan, as well as all her dear grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by her brother Ray [Leona] and sister Faithboth of Ontario, Brother–in-law Ron Ziegel [ Oakville], Sisters-in-law Bette Cronmiller (Kitchener) and Muriel Taylor (Port Colborne). Pre-deceased by her brothers Johnny [Toronto], Vern [ Kitchener], and sister Beverley [Oakville] and Step-Daughter Carole. Shirley will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and her dear friends.

Shirley was born in Williamsburg, On., daughter of Rev. Carl & Martha Cronmiller and had many fond memories of growing up there with the Whitaker family.

Shirley and Allan moved to Renfrew in 1949 and spent many fun hours building their cottage on Calabogie Lake and then entertaining friends and family there for 25 years.

Shirley, the teacher, loved the children she taught in Renfrew and Burlington and was instrumental in developing a speech program in Halton Region.

She also had a love for poetry and was talented enough to compose a book of poems: Thoughts For All Seasons.

Shirley was honoured by the Ontario Government as “Woman of the Year” in 1975

She was very active in the local and Canada-wide Lutheran church throughout her life.

Besides her family, Shirley’s main love was to travel. She visited Europe, British Isles, Caribbean, Florida, and across Canada from east to west and to the north many times. Her suitcase was never empty for long!

Upon retirement Shirley was blessed for 30 years to live 6 months each year at her beloved cottage in Calabogie surrounded by her extended family, and 6 months with her Florida friends in Sebring.

Following Shirley’s request, cremation has occurred and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

On-line condolences can be made at Smith’s Funeral Home in Burlington www.smithsfh.com
