Obituary for Shirley June Salmon (Chester)

Shirley June Salmon (Chester)
February 9th, 1923 – December 4th, 2018
Shirley June Salmon (Chester) oldest daughter of Frank and Gladius Chester (pre-deceased) and beloved wife of Mark Paupst Salmon (pre-deceased) of 31 years passed away on December 4th, 2018 at Alexander Place in Waterdown, Ontario after a short illness surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley resided in Burlington and Toronto and also resided for many years in Brockville, and Prescott Ontario.
Shirley was born in Toronto on February 9th, 1923 and grew up in Thornhill, Ontario, with her parents and her two siblings Noreen (Boddy) and Ken. She attended Forest Hill Secondary School and was active in the Drama Club and the school newspaper writing a weekly column, which we are all sure helped lead to her love of reading. Shirley was known to have read every book in the local libraries where ever she lived.
Our family remembers many stories of her childhood her friends and her close family. After graduating from business school and a very short carrier in accounting Shirley met and then married her forever love Mark. As with most wives in the early 1940’s she stayed home to raise their first child Susanne while Mark went off to war. After the war ended, she and Mark relocated to Prescott Ontario, where they started a business and continued to grow their family. Her husband Mark was very involved in his business, the community and politics, of course Shirley was always there to support him and reign him in when needed. A highlight of Shirley’s life was when she and Mark were presented to Queen Elizabeth in 1959 during the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Sadly, Shirley lost Mark at an early age. She sorely missed him for the rest of her life.
Shirley is survived by her six children Susanne, Peter, Paul, Mark Stephen, Catherine, David and her sister Noreen (Boddy). She was especially proud of her grandchildren Evan, Mark and Carrie.
Shirley’s family hopes everyone can remember the wonderful life she had and the ever-lasting life she will have now have that she is with her forever love Mark.
A celebration of her life will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home, 485 Brant St., Burlington Ontario at 10:00 AM on Saturday December 8th. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM with a reception to follow the service.
