Obituary for Shirley Maxine Eichenberg (Holland)

Shirley Maxine Eichenberg (Holland)
EICHENBERG, Shirley

With great sadness, the family of Shirley Eichenberg announces her peaceful passing on Monday 31 December 2018, at the age of 87 years. Her generous spirit, open mind and joie de vivre will always remain in our hearts.

Shirley was born in 1931 on the family farm in Brownsville, Ontario and was the devoted daughter of Arthur and Nellie Holland. In 1949, she completed high school in Tillsonburg, Ontario, where she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Eichenberg. After graduation, at the top of her class, Shirley advanced to post-secondary studies at the University of Western Ontario.

Shirley and Bill were married on 31 July 1951, thus beginning a committed and absolute partnership that endured for over six decades. The newlyweds lived in London, Ontario while Bill completed his studies and they embarked on creating the foundations of their family, social and professional life for years to come. In 1960, Shirley and Bill moved to Burlington, Ontario where they established a busy life filled with raising five children, engaging in community, completing projects and pursuing interests - all shaped by Shirley’s enthusiastic, can-do attitude and fun-loving optimism.

Shirley and Bill were long time members of the Burlington Curling Club, where Shirley served as President of the Ladies’ section from 1980 to 1981. Together, Shirley and Bill built life-long friendships on the rink that continue to this day. In 1985, Shirley joined the volunteers of the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Auxiliary -initiating a 28-year commitment to this key organization, including serving as President and sitting on the Hospital Foundation Board. In recent years, Bill and Shirley enjoyed the fellowship of the Probus Club of Burlington. They also joined the Roseland Club, sparking the renewal of many friendships and connections in town. Shirley and Bill were life-long members of Wellington Square United Church.

For more than 50 years, happy summers were spent at the family cottage in Turkey Point, Ontario, hosting family and friends, celebrating events and setting the stage for our many fondly shared memories. Bridge club, bonspiels, fantastic sewing and knitting projects, world-class baking, world travels, family history research, supporting those who needed her and the work of good causes – she did it all.

Shirley was the devoted and loving wife of Bill for 67 years. She was the cherished mother of Paul Eichenberg, Lynne Eichenberg (Brad Golden), Peter Eichenberg (Isabel Lorda), Mark Eichenberg (Theresa Morley), and Anne Eichenberg (Dale Hancocks). She was the proud grandmother of Edie, Aden, Rowan, Lex, Emma, Noel and Astrid.

Shirley is predeceased by her parents and brothers Mack Holland (Ella Jean) and Wray Holland (late Jean Isabel). We are also thinking, with sadness, of Shirley’s deep and close connection with her late sister-in-law and late brother-in-law, Shirley and Paul Jackson of Calgary. Shirley will be greatly missed by her extended family and vast array of friends. She was strong, gracious, compassionate and creative.

Heartfelt thanks to Shirley’s many caregivers in recent years and to the nurses and staff at Joseph Brant Hospital, for their excellent care. Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block north of City Hall), Burlington, 905-632-3333, on Sunday, January 6th, 2019 from 3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. Interment will be held in Tillsonburg, at a later date. A Celebration of Life is planned for early 2019. Please visit Smith’s Funeral Home website for details.
