Obituary for Rose Fehervari (Schonbacher)

It is with great sadness that we announce that Rosi Fehervari passed away at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington on Friday, July 9, 2021 at the age of 97 after succumbing to complications from Covid-19. She was predeceased by her husband Frank (2005) and is survived by her two children Vera (Gordon) and Joe (Alison).

Rosi was the last surviving child of an established farming family of 10 children from the small Austrian town of Übelbach, Steiermark (Styria) where music and hospitality were prevalent. In addition to friends and family here, her passing is being grieved by many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and great-grand nephews/nieces in Austria, Italy, and the United States.

Her farm upbringing and experiences that shaped so many of her generation, helped her develop a life-long habit of self-reliance and determination. Rosi emigrated to Canada, following Frank, on her own. They married in Canada and eventually settled in Burlington, where Frank worked for the Ford Motor Co., and raised their two children. She had a sparkling personality, loved keeping up to date on the news, and talking politics and fashion. Rosi had a natural curiosity and was a life long learner and greatly enjoyed social interaction with other people.

Rosi was very home-oriented, living in the same Burlington house for over 65 years, where one of her greatest pleasures was preparing delicious, freshly-made family meals. She very much enjoyed camping and cross country skiing and also enthusiastically engaged with several different social communities over her long life. Physical activity continued throughout her life, and as a resident of Tansley Woods, Rosi could be seen roaming about with her walker. She especially loved her outdoor walks. Throughout her life in Canada, she frequently travelled back to her Austrian home and never lost touch with her many relatives. She was always proud of her Austrian heritage, but ever so proud to be a Canadian.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Village of Tansley Woods for their care and support for Rosi these past few years. We would also like to especially acknowledge and thank Karen Masters who provided one-on-one individualized companion support to Rosi, which very much benefited Rosi’s quality of life while she lived with dementia.

This wonderful care was provided by all during the period of a global pandemic which presented the utmost challenges in keeping our most vulnerable and loved ones safe. It is indeed heartbreaking that Rosi, double-vaccinated for COVID several months ago, succumbed to COVID despite the best efforts of staff at Tansley Woods and Joseph Brant Hospital, who cared for her in her final days. Rosi drew on what strength and awareness she still possessed despite her declining health, to be feisty right to the end. She was small in stature but mighty in character.

Cremation has occurred and a celebration of her life and subsequent cemetery interment is to be scheduled for a future date.
