Obituary for Ralph deBlauw

With a grieving heart, I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Ralph deBlauw, from complications of P.S.P. on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Chartwell Brant L.T.C. in Burlington. Ten days earlier, he turned 85. Ralph was my "lieve man" and best friend for 44 years. He emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada at age 14 with his parents David deBlauw and Lammechien (Lammie) Walburg-deBlauw, his sister Dina deBlauw-Rintjema, and his brother John deBlauw (Judy). They arrived in Quebec City aboard the S.S. Tabinta on May 9, 1949 travelling by train to Port Colborne where they were met by their sponsor for whom they were obligated to work for one year. Ralph is survived by me, his wife, Brenda deBlauw (Iler), sons Michael, Barry and Darrell, grandchildren Tara Kuus (Bruce), Shauna Kuetemann (Jonathon), LeeAnn deBlauw and Alexa Rae Collver, and great-grandchildren Haley, Lily, Hayden, Adrienne, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ralph was a loving father to his three sons and raised them on his own for many years. When I became his partner, he was a great stepfather to my daughters Colleen Kay (deceased July 3, 2018) and Marcia Kay-Collver (deceased June 5, 2013). Ralph had a wonderful sense of humour and chose to see the good in people; his glass was ALWAYS more than half full. He was helpful, kind, loving, compassionate and caring. His passion was playing hockey. He was a long-time member of the Burlington Oldtimers Hockey Club and also played pick-up hockey a few times a week at Carlisle Arena. He was often the first person to volunteer if help was needed. He was a sought-out partner at the Monday Euchre Club at Burlington Legion for many years and loved fishing and moose hunting. We travelled well together on various cruises and enjoyed many trips to Europe, visiting relatives and travelling with his Dutch cousins to other European countries. Supported by family in his one final unselfish act, Ralph donated his physical body to McMaster University for their Education Program in Anatomy as "a teacher" on a long term basis. A remembrance celebration will be held on January 11, 2020 at Smith's Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are encouraged to share stories and visit from 12 noon until the start of service. Donations would be welcome and appreciated at McMaster Education Program in Anatomy.
