Obituary for Milton Peterson

The family of Milton Peterson is greatly saddened to announce his peaceful passing from a stroke on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022 at the age of 92. He will be lovingly remembered by his children – Jeff (Kate), Chris (Eileen), Erin (Mark) and Mike (Laura). He also had 10 grandchildren along with their partners that he cherished and loved dearly – Derek, Brian (Ailsa), Mitchell (Claire), Haley, Tanner (Shelby), Cole (Maddy), Jagger, Christie (Parker), Tyler and Gunnar.

Milton was born on November 26, 1929 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. He was the baby of 10 to parents Benedikt Peterson and Raghneidur Olafsdottir. He was proud of his Icelandic descent and spoke highly of his childhood growing up in Saskatoon. He married Barbara Spilsted in 1952, who passed away in 2020, a marriage that lasted 68 years. They waited a long time to have children, so while Barbara worked two jobs, Milton finished his degree at the University of Alberta in Civil Engineering. Over the years, Milton and Barbara moved many times between Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario, and as a result, they made many dear friends across Canada. Milton lived a full life, both at home and at work. He had two successful careers, as an engineer and management consultant, until retiring at the age 68. He had plenty of hobbies, thoroughly enjoying golf, curling, and bridge while also entertaining family and friends throughout the years. He was particularly proud of his gardens, which he cultivated in every home he had. Sadly, Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s later in life. As a result, Milton spent many years caring for her through that difficult time refusing to pass this duty to others.

For those who wish, donations in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated.

Cremation will take place at Smith’s Funeral Home in Burlington, Ontario (905-632-3333) followed by a small family service. A celebration of life for both Milton and Barbara will take place on Monday, August 29th, 2022 from 12:00pm – 3:00pm at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club, 1725 Mississauga Road, Mississauga, Ontario.
