Obituary for Mary Theresa Korczak (Roczniak)

Mary Theresa Korczak (nee Roczniak) | March 7th 1934 - April 27th 2021

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Theresa Korczak (nee Roczniak). Beloved wife of the late Charles Korczak. Loving mother of Theresa (Alar), Louise (Dino), and Carl. Cherished grandmother of Krystyna, Nathalie (Michael), and Victoria. Cherished great-grandmother of Aaron Charles.

Mary was born in Hamilton on March 7th, 1934. She moved to their family farm in Burlington with her parents, Bernice and Peter Roczniak, along with siblings Jessie and Benny. Eventually, she married the love of her life, Charles Korczak, and together raised their family.

She will be remembered as a caring and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mum was an accomplished gardener, exceptional entertainer, and talented sewer and knitter. She had ‘best in show’ dahlias in the fall, and tended lovingly to her roses, rockery, vegetable garden, and raspberry bushes. Mum was always a farm girl at heart. She generously shared her veggies, homemade jams and many other canned goods with her family and neighbours. Often, she would meet us half-way at Tim Hortons to share the bounty. These meet-ups were so frequent that two undercover police officers became suspicious wanting to know what she was dealing!

Mary touched all those who knew her with her warm smile, unwavering positive attitude, joy for life, and great sense of humour; she often laughed at her own cheeky commentaries! She built a strong foundation for her family with warmth and peace at her core. After the passing of her beloved husband Charles, she began a new chapter in life by moving to the big city. It is no surprise that she made many new friends and enjoyed Tuesday coffees at her condo, evening cards, early morning walking club, bowling tournaments, and weekend visits to her friends’ cottage.

She was so fortunate to have had the support of a team of caregivers whose extraordinary love and dedication were second to none. Mary cherished her daily heart-to-heart conversations with devoted caregiver Louise S.; daily laughter with Genieve G., morning fitness sessions with the ever-encouraging Victoria C.; and beautiful walks along the lake with Bele M. and spa days with Eva P., all of whom she adored.

We will always remember Mum as a person who carried herself with dignity and grace, applied common sense in everything she did, and never complained even in her most difficult moments. Humility, simplicity and respect for others were an integral part of her farm-girl roots. Spending time with her great-grandson was the highlight of her last few months, as she could not wait to hold him in her outstretched arms. Mary’s legacy will live on with her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada or a charity of your choice.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes, Cremation has taken place. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, a Private Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021.
