Obituary for Marley Yott

Written by Sabrina Yott

Marley Yott
July 6, 1995 - June 3, 2020

My sibling Marley passed away unexpectedly on June 3rd in their university town of Guelph. Marley was only here on earth for a short time, but lived every moment of their life to the fullest. Beloved by parents Penelope and Brian Yott, their sister Sabrina Yott, godfather and uncle James Yott, grandparents Maraget and Ken Yott, extended family, friends and by partners Finch Livesley and Sarah Sheffe. Marley was a pillar of the LGBTQ+ community in Guelph and was loved by many. Marley was especially known in the transgender community and with ARCH as a selfless and supportive leader. I remember Marley saying once, “Ya I’m transgender, but there are so many things that are more interesting about me!” That couldn’t be truer of my sibling.

Marley loved to sing and their experiences with the Oakville Children’s Choir, the Rainbow Chorus and the Guelph Chamber Choir made them extremely happy. Anyone who had the pleasure of watching Marley sing knows what I’m talking about. Marley traveled extensively with these choirs, competing in choral competitions in far reaching locations from Calgary to Argentina, Greece and Italy. Marley also cherished all of nature and enjoyed tending the garden hiking, canoeing and all animals. Marley loved being active, either alone or with friends, and developed a passion for wood burning, wood carving and knitting.

I cannot sum up Marley’s life in a few short words but their kind heart and gentle soul will be remembered and missed greatly.

We are also dedicating a Maple Tree in the Royal Botanical Gardens (Arboretum 990137 A) as a public location to visit and remember Marley.
