Obituary for Marion Charlton Conlan (Brown)

Marion was born to Minnie and Matthew Brown of Notre Dame de Grace (Montreal) in 1926. She had one older sister, Flora Compton (nee Brown), who predeceased her in 1981. She attended Montreal High School for Girls and excelled in academics and athletics. After high school she worked at Montreal Trust as a clerical assistant/stenographer.

She had various adventures with her girlfriends. One summer while golfing she experienced a “hole in one”, a first for the club and her, and she was proud of the newspaper article and photo that accompanied it.

She met Albert Conlan, a tool and die designer from Montreal’s North End. They courted and were married in September 1951. They made their life in Lachine, Quebec.

7 years later, in January 1958, their only daughter, Debra Lynn was born, attending Lachine High School and later University of New Brunswick. Debra married John Kennedy, her high school sweetheart, who unfortunately died in 2003.

Marion was an avid church worker. She was a lifetime member of the Anglican Church Women, initially with St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Lachine and later with St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Burlington. She believed in helping those in need and less fortunate.

Marion returned to the work force when Debra was a teenager. She worked with temporary agencies and was loved wherever she worked because she was so meticulous. Eventually she was offered a full-time job at Ciba-Geigy (Dorval, Quebec), which is now Novartis Pharma, as Administrative Assistant to the Medical Director. She loved her job and worked there until her retirement. She was transferred to Mississauga in the 1980’s and finally settled in Burlington.

Marion and Albert loved their beautiful condo in Burlington, and spent their retirement years there. Marion loved to paint and wallpaper. There wasn’t a home decorating project she would not take on. She loved to knit, sew, crochet and made beautiful Sunday dinners complete with China, silver and crystal.

There was always a spring trip to St. Petersburg Beach in Florida at The Alden, which was enjoyed tremendously.

Albert passed away in 2007, and Marion kept busy with ACW and her family.

COVID was a different time. Marion moved to Oakville to live with her daughter Debra, but missed her independence and the Burlington condo. After 2 ½ years, Marion relocated to the Delmanor Glen Abbey, Oakville in December 2022, and made that her home for the last several months.

Marion leaves behind her only daughter Debra Kennedy (late John), grandchildren Meghan Kennedy (David Minard), Matthew Kennedy (Jessica Coelho), three little great-grandchildren Emerson, Hadley, and Brooks, whom she loved dearly, grand-dog Val, and devoted niece Norma Hains (David) of Sarnia.

Thank you to all the Emergency doctors and the Palliative Team at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital -your devotion to your jobs is greatly appreciated.
