Obituary for Luise Metcalfe (Utzinger)

Our wonderful mother and grandmother died peacefully on Saturday April 18 at the age of 88.
Luise was a passionate gardener, hiker and lover of nature in all its forms.
She was full of curiosity about the world. Born in the town of Bulach, near Zurich, Switzerland, Luise delighted in travel. She took jobs in different parts of Switzerland, then worked as an au pair in England and finally, crossed the ocean to Canada where she married a young engineer named Doug Metcalfe, our father.

Luise raised her family in Owen Sound, Ontario where she was well-known for her glorious garden.
She was also an avid hiker. As a child, Luise went hiking regularly in the Swiss alps with her parents Gottlieb and Luise Utzinger and her siblings Gottlieb, Dorli and Susi. As a mother, she introduced her own children to the marvels of the Swiss mountains on summer holidays and along with husband Doug, she became an energetic walker and supporter of the Bruce Trail in Ontario.
Luise loved being a mother. Her four children - Peter, Barb, Rhoda and Maya – remember her wide smile and easy laugh and her excellent cooking.
She adored spending time with her grandchildren – Grace, Brooke, Leah, Jake, Sophie and Rory – and wished she could have spent more.
Luise is survived and remembered by all her children, grandchildren and sister Susi Utzinger.

Our family would like to thank the staff of Cama Woodlands nursing home in Burlington for their compassionate care in the final years of our mother’s life.

An informal gathering to mark the passing of Luise Metcalfe will be held on Thursday Aug. 13 from 3-5pm at the Best Western Inn On The Bay in Owen Sound (1800 2nd Ave E, Owen Sound, ON N4K 5R1). There will be an indoor and outdoor area to accommodate social distancing and weather.
