Obituary for Katherine “Katica” Petaci (nee Holjevac)

It is with heavy hearts we announce our wonderful mothers passing. Katherine passed peacefully, at Joseph Brant Hospital on Sunday March 24, 2024 at the age of 84. Beloved wife of the late Steve Petaci for 48 years; loving mother of Helen (Pierre), Steve (Brenda) and Marianne (Allan); and proud grandmother of Daniel, Kathleen, Nikolas and Alexander. Katica will also be deeply missed by her extended family in Croatia, by her many friends at Pinedale Estates and her parish family at St. Patrick’s, in Burlington.

Katica loved and lived for her family and friends. She loved the holidays and cooking for special occasions or just Sunday dinner. She was a very sociable person and loved all her friends at Pinedale Estates, where she played Euchre weekly, and enjoyed all their social events. She traveled for more than a decade to Florida as a snowbird, with her loving husband of 48 years. After he passed, she enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean and Mexico with her grandsons. She was an active senior, who loved life and all those around her, making friends wherever she went.

She had many names: Baka to Grandchildren, Kuma to many special people in her life, Katie to all her friends. However, her biggest role was Mom, who was a dedicated loving person, who loved her family fiercely right to the end of her days.

Finally, she had a very special relationship with her grandson Nikolas. They were best friends. She will be greatly missed.

With broken hearts we said “goodbye for now” on Monday April 1, 2024. The family takes comfort in knowing she did not suffer and is now in a better place.

A private service has taken place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. For those who wish, donations in Katica’s honour to “Autism Speaks Canada” would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
