Obituary for John Graham Swanson
John Graham Swanson, MD, MSc, CCFP, FCFP.
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Graham Swanson.
Graham graduated from University of Western Ontario Medical school in 1971. He served as a Family Physician in Burlington, Ontario for over 40 years, then switched his focus to palliative care after retirement. He was an Associate Clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. Graham taught family medicine to many residents entering family practice. In 2004 he was recognized as the Jerry Cohen teacher of the year by McMaster University. In 2007, he was awarded Family Physician of the year for Ontario and Canada. He sat as a member of the Halton Diabetes Coordinating Committee, the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant, Local Health Integration Network, Regional Palliative Care Network.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Lydia, siblings Elspeth (Malcolm) Sinclair, Barbie (Kingsley), David (Laurie), and children Gillian (Mike), Andrea (Stephen), Lynley (Wayne), grandchildren William, Violet, Alison, Hannah and George and several nieces and nephews. He was a cherished part of his extend family and leaves behind countless friends, colleagues, college and high school alumni, and choir mates.
Graham was a poet, academic, author, Drag Lake enthusiast, punner, serial toaster, reader, Zoomer, traveller, laugher, and life celebrator.
There was no distance he would not travel at any given moment to show up for a friend or family member in need. He lived his motto, he always looked on the bright side of life.
Visitation will be held at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of the QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333 on Friday October 28th from 6:00-9:00 pm and Saturday from 4:00-7:00pm.
There will be a private family service and internment. Followed by a Celebration of Life at Burlington Golf & Country Club on Sunday, November 6th from 2:00-4:00pm.
