Obituary for Jaroslawa Helen Plawiuk

It is with great sadness that the family of Jaroslawa Helen Plawiuk announce her peaceful passing on February 27, 2023, in Burlington, Ontario, at the age of 96.

Jaroslawa was born in Bila-Ternopil, Ukraine on March 24, 1926, youngest of three children to Wolodymyr and Maria Boyko.

She was predeceased in 2012 by her loving husband of 64 years Mykola. She was also predeceased by her parents Wolodymyr and Maria and brothers Roman and Bohdan.

She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her children Orest “Russ” (Wendy), Nestor (Mari), Ulana (Tim), and Oksana (Bob). Grandchildren; Michael (Caroline), Daniel (Shauna), Andrew (Hayden), Matthew (Kristin), Jeremy (Jill), Natalie (Derek), Andrea (Martin), Alex and Nadia. Great-grandchildren; Noah, Max, Cadence, Wesley, Cullen, Eleanor, Grace, Brodie and Owen.

Jaroslawa and Mykola met in Germany in 1945, married in 1948 and emigrated to Canada in 1949, arriving at Halifax on December 24 (Christmas Eve). She and Mykola lived in Montreal for several years before moving to Hamilton Ontario.

Over the years they lived and worked in both Canada and the United States and upon retirement they moved back to Canada to live in Burlington close to their growing family.

After Ukraine declared its independence in 1991, Jaroslawa and Mykola were able to spend several months of each year up to 2011 living and working in Kyiv, Ukraine. Some of their happiest moments during that period were when their children and grandchildren visited them in Kyiv and they were able to proudly show them around the beautiful city.

Visitation at Smith’s Funeral Home, 485 Brant St., Burlington (905-632-3333) on Sunday, March 5, 2023 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, followed by Panachyda. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday March 6, 2023 at Holy Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 419 Pearl Street, Burlington at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place privately at St. Volodymyr Cemetery, Oakville following the mass.
