Obituary for Janet Helen Rooney

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished Janet Rooney, age 64, following an unexpected illness she faced with extreme grace and courage. Janet was the devoted and caring wife to her beloved husband, Jon Van Deventer - the love of her life; loving mother to Melissa and Norman; and step-mother to Rachel (Garrett), Kehl (Jill) and Venessa (Adam). Janet was a doting Nana and loved nothing more than spending time with Averi, Harlyn, Bryar, Evelyn, and Emily. Janet was the adored daughter and best friend of Kathleen Rooney and the late James Rooney, and the beloved sister of Kathy (Ed), Michael (Debbie), Jamie (Tamara), Erin (Gedis), Daniel, Kelly (Bob), and Kevin (Janice); and bonus sister to Brenda, Barb, and Anne. Janet was a fun-loving Auntie to Shean (Lindsay), Taylor, Lindsay, Nick, Aislinn, Meghan, Quinn, Charlotte, Michael (Mariah), Noah, James and Maddy; and sister-in-law to Kent (Aileen), Linda (George), Jane (Pat) and Randee with whom she shared a deep and loving relationship.

Special thanks is extended to her sister Kathy and daughter-in-law Jill for their compassionate nursing care; the incredibly kind and attentive ICU and Palliative Care staff teams at the Juravinski Hospital; and Reverends Janet Kennedy and Ted Power. Their numerous visits, prayers and thoughtful meditations were of great comfort for Janet.

In all of her life, Janet has been extraordinarily kind and compassionate. She cherished time spent with her large family, extended family, her volleyball and baseball teammates, and singing in the church choir. Janet had the sweetest character, a zest and passion for life, a deep faith in God, and much love to share. It is her unique and vulnerable soul that we will miss the most, as well as her unending desire to help others. She will be forever missed with deep sadness by all who knew her.

“The most important thing is love. Open your heart and fill it with love. It’s all that matters.”
