Obituary for Ian J.S. Moore

Ian J.S. Moore
August 9, 1936 - October 6, 2022

Ian John Sibbald Moore died Thursday, October 6, 2022, at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario. He was 86.

Ian leaves his beloved wife Patricia Jean (nee Thompson), his daughters Siobhan Kathleen Moore (Rob Lamberti), Lisa Bronwyn Moore (Pierre Boudreau), and his grandchildren, Dylan Silvio and Rose Kathleen Lamberti, and Leo and Charlotte Boudreau. Ian also leaves bereft his devoted companion Beauty, the cat, formerly of Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island.

He was predeceased by his baby sister Caroline in 1941, his younger brother Kenneth Alexander Moore (Anne Moore) in 2019 and their mother Jemima (Sibbald) Seddon in 1986.

Ian left his mark in his work as a medical and science writer, notably as the editor of MD of Canada, and one of the founding members of the Canadian Science Writers' Association (CSWA). A peer in the industry commented on his work as a writer: “I loved to read his stories. He was literate and used vocabulary unlike the others.”

Ian had a full life and had a special charm that he carried with him until the night before he died.

Ian left us suddenly that morning. Perhaps it was good that it was quick for we did not want him to suffer any longer.

Patty remembers the favourite sayings Ian had, how he made us all laugh, and that whenever things got tough, Ian pushed through, carried on and showed us how to do the same.

In his younger days, Ian showed his speed, strength, and determination on the playing field as captain of the Wanderers touch football team in Montreal. Ian brought his team to victory many times.

His family was his focus as was his work building the family’s summer home on Prince Edward Island, the cottage he called the Cruiser Canavoy. His daughters remember summers at nearby Lakeside Beach and long walks to the “river” on that beach.

With Patty, he shared laughter and a combined sense of their outlook on the arts, books, music, and of course, hockey and the Montreal Canadiens.

Ian knew how to live Iife well. He enjoyed films - À bout de souffle, music - the Modern Jazz Quartet, and history.

We will remember him with love, as a darling man, a loyal and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and companion to Beauty aka Miss Puss.

He was someone to know.
He was someone to love.
We were lucky to have had him in our lives.
As Patty would say,
“This is for you, Spats.”

Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at 9 am followed by a Celebration of Ian's Life at 10 am.
