Obituary for Helen Thompson

Helen Thompson ( Hunter )

January 08, 1925 – May 20, 2022

Helen, Mom, Granny passed away peacefully on May 20, 2022 at Brant Long Term Care, Burlington, Ontario, Canada.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Lee (Bob), Greg (Marianne) and Tessa; her grandchildren, Sian, Gary, Nicholas (Erin), Darren (Hayley) and Nicole; her South African/Australian son in law Shaun and his children Wesley and Lyle.

She was as proud as punch of her three great-grandchildren, Aedan, Devin and Reef.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Arthur, her loving daughter Carol and first grand child Michéle.

Helen will also be missed by a legion of extended family. Her younger sister Marion who resides in South Africa and who was in constant contact with her via WhatsApp texts and photos right up until the end and with whom she held a deep affection and friendship…. Peni, Les, Tyler and Spence who kept her busy with the constant delivery of chocolates and golf magazines; friends from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada and by the staff that so diligently took care of her during her stay in long term care.

Never one to back down from life’s challenges, Helen could best be described as a spirited go getter. From being widowed at the age of 75, to gradually losing her mobility in her later years, she bore adversity with practical determination.

She was a volunteer nurse during the second world war and her working years were initially spent as a devoted registered nurse and then the corporate world until retirement.

She embraced the outdoors and sporting life in South Africa with zest. Playing field hockey and tennis in her youth and then becoming an avid golfer once she married her beloved Arthur. Always an active mind she pursued painting in her retirement and became quite the skilled artist.

Helen, was larger than life and left us with an abundance of little life lessons and sayings to carry us through the years to come. Her mind was incredible and remained sharp and intact until the very end.

We are stronger for your strength. And warmer for your love. A remarkable woman who did it her way! And did it so well.

A very special thank you to the Brant Centre staff for their kindness, support and care of mom during her stay.
