Obituary for Gloria Ann Matthews (Delaney)

Surrounded by her loving family, it is with very heavy hearts that we, the family of Gloria Ann (Delaney) Matthews, age 62, announce her untimely passing at Joseph Brant Hospital, in Burlington, on Tuesday July 30, 2019, after a hard fought battle with Cancer.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Gloria was the daughter of the late William and Beatrice Delaney.
Gloria “Gramere” is survived by her husband, Ed, married July 29, 1978, daughter Ashley (Curtis) Roach, and grandson Patrick. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Dolly Matthews, brother Richard (Debbie) Delaney, sister Paula (Bill) Haley, brother Ambrose (Cathy) Delaney, sister-in-law Heather (Hal) MacLellan, brother-in-law Bruce (Jackie) Matthews, sister-in-law Kim (David) MacKinnon; her nieces and nephews, Trena (Matthew) Head, Shawn Delaney, Dean Delaney (Dawn), Andrew (Chrissy) Haley, Pamela Haley (Billy), Lisa Delaney (Nima), Gregory Delaney (Andrea), Danielle (Eddie) Hillman, Roger Matheson (Tracey), Mark (Charmaine) Matheson, Tracy MacAulay, Ryan MacLellan, Jan (Jason) MacNeil, Victoria Matthews (Joey), Holly MacKinnon (Ryan) and Cameron Mackinnon (Kelsey), special extended family members most important to Gloria: Herb Lawson, Hildegarde “Grauntie” and Ed “Gruncle” Lawson, and Joan “Davy” Cino; her many aunts and uncles, great nieces and nephews, extended family and cousins in Ontario and Belle Cote, Cape Breton. She was predeceased by her sister, Elaine Delaney, and father-in-law, Fraser Matthews.
Gloria was the most loving, compassionate and generous earthly angel. She helped countless family members, friends and neighbours with anything possible and enjoyed being the host for many special events and ‘simple’ get-togethers. She loved her family and spending as much time as she could in Cape Breton. After living in Sydney, Nova Scotia for 20 years, she moved to Burlington with Ed and they began building their life together. Gloria was a hard-working, goal-oriented employee for Butler Buildings, Fuller Brush and Nabisco Foods. Due to a chronic illness, she was limited in her working career and dedicated her life to being a mom to her daughter, Ashley. Gloria travelled the World with her childhood sweetheart Ed, Ashley and her skating team, and her family. The new love of her life was her first grandson, Patrick, born in September 2018, and she spent as much time as she could enjoying his milestones with Ed, Ashley, and Curtis.
The family would like to thank all of the healthcare providers at Joseph Brant Hospital and Juravinski Hospital for all of their loving support and care of Gloria during her last few months, especially Dr. Harrison, Ildy Tettero, Amanda, the Cancer Clinic, and Pallative Care teams.
Visitation will be held, Saturday August 3, 2019 from 3pm-6pm at Smith’s Funeral Home on Guelph Line in Burlington. There will also be a Service held in Belle Cote, Cape Breton in the coming weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gloria’s memory can be made to Joseph Brant Hospital, The Canadian Cancer Society, or Belle Cote Community Centre in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
