Obituary for Gezina "Gena" VanHardeveld (Boekelo)

Just 9 days shy of her 99th birthday, Gena said goodbye to this world and hello to eternal life with her Lord and Saviour, whom she loved and served and who brought her hope and comfort. She is reunited with her beloved husband Anthony (Tony). Gena is survived by her children; Paul and Adriana, (their children: Amanda Van Hardeveld; Christina Van Hardeveld and Gerry Glass; Patricia Van Hardeveld and Josh Downes; Wayne and Christina Van Hardeveld), Tom and Rita (their children: Eric and Mandy (Sam, Hailey and Grace); Matthew and Rachel (Austin); Sarah and Andrew McGrath (Isaac, Isla and Josiah); Philip and Kendra (Kara)), Evelyn and Brian DeKleine. Survived by sister-in-law Gerda van Hardeveld of the Netherlands. Gena was born in Amsterdam the Netherlands, the youngest of 5 children. She met her husband at the church youth group and married October 8th, 1947. They and their 3 children immigrated to Canada in 1967. She loved to work with her hands, was a talented seamstress, flower arranger, gardener and knitter. Gena loved to lend a helping hand when needed and she and Tony visited the elderly, always bringing soup or home-baked goods. Gena struggled with Alzheimer's for over 14 years and even though she lost many abilities, she never lost the ability to love with kisses and hugs. We are grateful for the care she received at Shalom Manor on Sunrise Court for 7 years. Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632 -3333), on Monday, March 27 from 12:30 p.m. until the start of the Celebration of Life at 1 p.m. Reception to follow. Private Interment will precede service.
