Obituary for George Edward Chubb

Chubb, FRCO, FAGO, B.Mus[McGill], George Edward
(Sep. 7, 1921 – Feb. 1, 2021).

George was born and raised in the busy musical world of his parents, John Frederick and Rebecca (Tibbitts) Chubb, in Vancouver where his father was Organist and Choir Director at Christ Church Cathedral. After high-school, George became one of the full-time piano/organ students of his father, Fred Chubb, FRCO, but WWII interrupted his education. From 1942-1945 George served in the RCAF as an air-frame mechanic at various bases around Canada. Following the war, he resumed his musical education largely under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Peaker at the Toronto Conservatory and at the Guildhall School of Music (London, Eng.) during which he earned both his FAGO and FRCO. During this time, George also was Organ Scholar at Wycliffe College, an experience he treasured and where he made numerous life-long friends. Apart from 3 years in the RCAF, from 1939-1984 George served continuously as organist and choirmaster at various Canadian churches including, St. Timothy’s (Toronto), St. James Westminster (London), Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity (Quebec City) and Trinity Memorial (Montreal, 22 years).

While in Quebec City, George began teaching music part time. In 1954, he became a full-time music teacher with the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal. From 1955 until he retired in 1984, he was the Vocal Music and Music Appreciation teacher at Verdun High School. During that time, his school choirs performed many major choral works, a success he always credited largely to an abundant supply of brilliant piano-accompaniment provided gratis by his wife, Joan.

In 1984, George and Joan retired in Burlington, Ontario. For 10 years or so, George filled in at various churches during vacations, as Interim Organist at St. George’s-on-the-Hill and at All Saints’, Kingsway, twice. George’s last few years were more difficult but enormous credit is due to the staff of Tansley Woods, Burlington, for the care and attention they gave him.

George was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Joan (Porter), and is survived by his three children, James, Mary (Doug) Keyes and John, his 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Due to current Public Heath restrictions, a memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
