Obituary for Esther Foss (Johnson)

FOSS, Muriel Esther Carleen (nee Johnson)-
Esther passed away peacefully at The Chartwell Waterford Long Term Care Residence, Oakville on Monday, April 4, 2022 at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late Warren George Foss for 73 years (November 6, 2021). Loving mother of Debora Swick (Dan), Carol Wolkoff (late Irvin), Susan Foss, Michael Foss (Lucy Nicolas) and Mona Foss (Michael Hill). Cherished Grandma of 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her extended family and friends.
Esther was born in Lamoureux, Alberta, the eldest of 6 girls, and spent her early years at school and on the family farm, working as hard as any boys, she would tell you.
Esther met Warren during high school in Fort Saskatchewan. Upon graduation she went to work at the Royal Bank in Fort Saskatchewan, while he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, keeping them apart until after the war. They married in 1948 and lived in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Yorkton and finally settled in Burlington for over 50 years.
Esther will be remembered for her phenomenal work ethic. Cooking meals, sewing clothes, growing vegetables, canning, pickling, baking bread, an endless list. The neighborhood children of Meadowhill Road of the 1970s likely still dream of her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. But Esther’s reach was also felt beyond the home. Long time members of the Appleby United Church community will recall her entrepreneurial fundraising talents, organizing and managing the production and sales of the United Church Women’s apple and meat pies, as well as many a rummage sale and flea market. Beyond the church, she volunteered for many years with Tele-Care, offering support and a sympathetic ear to those in crisis. Esther touched many lives. She will be fondly remembered for her warmth, hospitality and grace.
The Foss family would like to express sincere thanks to the dedicated staff at Chartwell Waterford Long Term Residence in Oakville for their excellent care.
Visitation will be held at APPLEBY UNITED CHURCH, 4407 Spruce Ave, Burlington on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 11 .a.m. Reception to follow in the church hall. Private interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Esther’s memory to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (www.alzheimer.ca).
