Obituary for Eric Norman Fowler

It is with profound sadness we mourn the passing of Eric N. Fowler, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He died July 2nd, 2023 surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born to John and Irene Fowler in Cornwall, Ontario where, as children, he and his sister Barbara spent part of their childhood during the harrowing years of World War II. Though Eric was immensely proud of his father, a Major in the Canadian Army, he and Barbara spent seven long years missing their father while he was serving overseas. Those years were brightened by the time spent on weekends in the loving care of their grandparents on the family farm where they could roam free of care.

Eric moved to St. Catharines and attended the St. Catharines Collegiate where he met Dorothy, his bride to be. They married in 1960 and Dorothy became known affectionately as “the bride” for the 62 years of a long and loving marriage. Eric and Dorothy's children, Robert and Scott, and their grandchildren Remy, Amiens, Cabot and Lorne are the joy and love of their lives. Eric loved them dearly as children and was extremely proud of them as adults.

Eric enjoyed a very successful and accomplished career in sales management. He was highly awarded in his 25 year career at Philips where his colleagues also became life-long friends. After retirement from Philips, he created a successful sales agency which prospered until his “real” retirement.

Eric also loved sports. He was an avid golfer and hockey player and, of late, a pickle ball player. He played Burlington Old Timer Hockey and was a member of the Burlington Golf and Country Club where he liked to recount the details of his two holes-in-one. Eric was as much about the camaraderie of sports as the game.

Retirement bought more time for Eric and Dorothy to engage in one of their passions together – travel. They loved a long road trip or a cruise and travelled the world. Eric loved to tell anyone who would listen how he walked on the Great Wall of China.

Eric and Dorothy loved to host gatherings at their home. The hallmark of these events was often music and always laughter. It also gave Eric an opportunity to tell his golf, hockey or business stories - and if you were lucky, you might even get to hear the same story more than once.

Eric's love will live in our hearts forever

A family interment service was held at Burlington Memorial Gardens, and a Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 29, 2023 from 2-5pm at the Burlington Golf and Country Club. Dorothy, Robert (Glynis), and Scott (Michelle) have been deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support from their extended family and friends.

If you wish, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Halton Learning Foundation, the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
