Obituary for Ellen Veronica Lynch (nee Grant)

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Ellen Veronica Lynch (nee Grant) on May 18, 2023, in Burlington, Ontario, at the age of 87. She was such a beautiful soul. Ellen is predeceased by her parents Annie Knox Grant (nee Orr) and Cecil Wood Grant and her adoring husband of 62 years, John Lynch, who passed away this past March.

Ellen was the beloved mother of Michael (Mary), Kathleen (Michael) and John (MaryBeth). She doted on her ten wonderful grandchildren: Scott, Sarah (Timothy), Grant, Bruce, Ellen, Matthew, Theresa, Caitlyn (Jesse), Joshua and Kristin. The many baby outfits she knitted for each of them are reminders of her devotion. Most recently, she cherished the time spent with her great grandchildren Josie, Reijer and Rowan.

Ellen was born in Rutherglen, Scotland. At the young age of ten, Ellen joined the Drama Club where she performed in plays throughout Scotland at various festivals over the next ten years, earning many accolades for her performances. Her passion for theatre never waned. In her late teens, after completing courses at Secretarial College, Ellen worked as a secretary before moving to Canada at the age of 21.

Ellen was a wonderful and kind individual. It’s no surprise that her many friendships formed early in life endured. She was always smiling!

Once happily married and with children, Ellen focused on family. She became known as something of a baker. A talent she inherited from her father who had owned a bakery in Scotland. Her signature Scottish shortbread was coveted by many. Once her children were older, Ellen returned to the secretarial field, working within the Halton Catholic School system. Her boundless energy and optimism were appreciated by teachers and students alike.

Upon retirement, Ellen and her husband John immediately set off on several wonderful European holidays, often joining friends along the way. Ellen was in her element. Soon her days were filled with many activities with her grandchildren, bridge with friends, music at the TSO, plays at the Shaw Festival and annual trips in early Spring to warmer climates to soak up the sun, sand and sea. Ellen loved the beach!

Ellen radiated joy throughout her life. She was an inspiration to many. May she now rest in peace together with her husband John.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church (2265 Headon Road, Burlington, ON) Thursday, May 25 at 11:00 a.m. Reception will follow. For those wishing to watch the service remotely, a livestream link is available here: Livestream Link

In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
