Obituary for Elizabeth “Liz” Jane Fyfe McFadden

Elizabeth “Liz” Jane Fyfe McFadden, 1964-2022

October 11, 2022- In the early hours of a beautiful autumnal morning, Elizabeth Jane Fyfe McFadden slipped away from the life she had lived so fulsomely in her last decade, with her cherished husband, Michael and stepson Christopher by her side. She leaves behind her parents, Alan and Sheila Fyfe; older sister, Alison Steele (Gerald), stepsons Christopher (Joanne) and Patrick, nephews James (Christina) and Charlie; cousins Irene (John) and Graham (Lindsey) and Derek, and siblings-in-law and their families: Jackie, Linda, Brian (Shannon), Judi, and Ken (Barbara); as well as her beloved wee dog, Bonnie. She was predeceased by her dear Aunt Faith, Uncle Gordon and cousin Audrey. She will be remembered by extended family members and friends all over Canada, the United States, Scotland and England. Many of these friends and family members joined Liz’s network of supporters, known as the Pink Power Army – who kept her going during her darkest hours, gave her the boost she needed before treatment or a test, and were on-hand to celebrate her ‘good’ days.

Elizabeth was born at home in Mount Vernon, outside Glasgow, Scotland on January 14, 1964. The family moved nearby to the village of Cambuslang, where the Fyfe girls grew up and made many friends that they still maintain today. They both attended West Coates Primary and Hutchesons’ Grammar School in Glasgow. Following the family’s emigration to Canada in 1980, including Elizabeth’s cat, Honey, Elizabeth finished high school in Port Credit and won a scholarship to the Hotel and Food Administration Degree Course at the University of Guelph. In both these places of learning, her long list of friends continued to grow.

Post-graduation, Liz gravitated towards human resources and worked in the hospitality industry, before joining Peel Regional Police in a civilian HR role, ultimately becoming a Human Rights Coordinator. It was at PRP that she met Mike, the love of her life, in 1992. They married in 1996, and charted a wonderful life together which only intensified when the dark shadow of cancer crossed her path in 2014, and again in 2020.

Having been a breast cancer survivor since 2015, Liz fought the devastating return of cancer bravely and valiantly, on her terms and with a formidable fortitude which sadly could not overcome this dreadful disease. Even though we were not nearly ready to let her go, the knowledge that her suffering was over and she was at peace brought comfort to all who had the good fortune to know her, who had their lives touched by her.
Elizabeth has requested that any donations made in her memory go to Joseph Brant Hospital – Cancer Unit, Boots on the Ground (BOTG) or any charity of your choice.

As per Liz's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitations with Elizabeth’s family will take place at Smith’s Funeral Home Chapel, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington, Ontario on Tuesday, October 18 from 3-5pm & 7-9pm. Service of Remembrance - Wednesday, October 19 at Smith's, Guelph Line from 1:00pm, with a reception to follow the service.

For those who wish to view the service remotely, a livestream is available. Please reach out to the family for the link.
