Obituary for Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Thomas (Browne)

Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Thomas (Browne)
Suddenly on June 3rd, 2018 at her Hearthstone home in Burlington Ontario, Elizabeth Jane Thomas passed away. She was born February 15, 1929 in Strathroy, Ontario, the first daughter of Avis Browne(nee Lipsit) and Clarence Browne. After high school graduation in Strathroy, she went on to study languages and received an Honors degree from Western University.

After graduation until 1956, Betty became the Personnel Officer for the Ontario Research Foundation in Mississauga. During this time she met Albert Henry Thomas and they married on May 21, 1955.

While her 2 sons were in school, Betty became very involved in many volunteer activities and always showed great dedication and commitment to whatever work she was involved with. She became a well known and highly respected person in the Burlington community. Her volunteering activities spanned decades. Betty assisted with Burlington’s first recycling program, was an active member of the Royal Botanical Gardens auxiliary committee, sat on the board of directors at the YMCA and was an active member of the University of Woman’s Club. Betty participated in full time work from 1977-1979 as director of the Burlington Volunteer Bureau, and later as manager of Information Burlington from 1980 - 1986. She was an active member at Port Nelson United Church in Burlington for many years. Despite her busy schedule with different activities, she always seemed to manage to spend quality time with her family. She especially enjoyed spending summer holidays up in Muskoka and the numerous trips back to the family farm in Strathroy. Her love of Burlington was reflected in lifelong friendships that were forged while living here.

She leaves her 2 sons, David William Thomas and Robert Clive Thomas. She also leaves a cousin Grace Bradley from Paris Ontario. She was pre-deceased by her sister Mary Katherine Sutherland(nee Browne).

A celebration of life, at her request ,will be held at the Pig and Whistle , 100 Burloak Drive in Burlington located at the grounds of the Hearthstone retirement/codo complex on Saturday June the 16th from 1 to 4 pm. A short formal service beginning at 1:00 pm will precede the Celebration of Life. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

If wished, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Betty can be made to any registered Humane Society in Ontario
