Obituary for Douglas Ross Rickard

Douglas Ross Rickard died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 22nd in his 105th year. He was among the last Canadian survivors of the Dieppe Raid in the Second World War, and in recognition of his service he was awarded the 1939/1945 Star, the Defence Medal, War medal 1939-1945 and the Dieppe Bar. In 2021, as acknowledgement of his excellence of service, he was awarded the French Legion of Honour.

He is survived by Jean Madeleine, his loving wife of 78 years, and his two daughters Marie and Gayle.

He will be deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews in both Canada and the UK, and by members of the Legion in Burlington who had become his community in his latter years.

Private cremation has taken place, and an internment at St James cemetery in Toronto will take place at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Douglas to the Burlington Humane Society would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
