Obituary for Douglas Alan Macdonald

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Douglas Alan Macdonald. Doug passed away peacefully with his beloved wife Ava by his side on Tuesday, September 19, at Carpenter Hospice, Burlington, Ontario. He was 65 years old. Doug battled cancer for the past three and a half years with grace, dignity, and quiet strength.

Doug enriched the lives of his family and friends. He and Ava filled their precious years with a lifetime’s worth of love and laughter, though their time together was too short. Loving father to daughters Adrienne (Jesse), Heather, Margot, and step-daughter Olivia. Adored grandfather ‘Deedad’ to Theodore and Emanuele, who delighted in their time with him. In the last years of Doug’s life, a wonderful new family was formed that Doug cherished, a family that holds a profound appreciation for the years they had together. He will be deeply missed by his brothers Glenn (Donna) and Scott (Marianne), and all his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Alan (2023) and Patricia (2021), and brother Colin (Barbara) (1994).

Born in Hamilton, Doug completed a BA in Philosophy at Western University followed by an MBA at McMaster and built a successful career in the international business community. Doug was passionate about his work and valued applying Christian principles - particularly treating all people with respect and honesty - to build thriving businesses. He was an avid traveler and particularly relished cycling trips through Europe, skiing in the mountains out west, and traveling with his daughters. He loved to finish the day with music, loved ones, and a good glass of wine. Doug was also a gifted musician whose voice will always be treasured by his family.

A brilliant, honest, dynamic man, Doug lived life with beautiful enthusiasm and approached even the hardest times with a sense of humour that lifted those around him. Doug was also deeply spiritual and cherished his time at St. Luke’s Church, the sacred home where he has come to rest. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Anglican Church (1371 Elgin Street, Burlington, 905-634-1826) on Saturday, October 7th, at 11a.m. Interment at St. Luke’s Churchyard and reception to follow. Friends and family are welcome to join in the celebration of Doug’s life. For those who cannot attend in person, live streaming of the ceremony is available through the Smith's website on Douglas' memorial page under photos and videos or you can click here, click on the 'Virtual Service" tab, and then page down to live streaming, click on the one labeled for the funeral and it will begin streaming from there, once the serviced commences.
