Obituary for Dora Sutherland

Passed away peacefully in Hamilton, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the age of 96 years. Beloved wife of Alistair Sutherland for 69 years. Loving mother of John Sutherland (Trish) and Dawn Sutherland. Cherished grandmother of Tyler (Alex) and Jordan (Michelle). Dora will be dearly missed by her twin sister Dorothy Pantin (Mervyn). Predeceased by her siblings Marie Merrin, Alyce Chen (Colvin) and Frank St. Juste Jr, her parents, Frank St. Juste Sr, Pauline (nee Seeberan).

Dora led a very full life with many friends. She was born in Trinidad, grew up in St. Lucia (where she met our dad) and immigrated to Canada in 1954. Our dad was already attending university in Canada and shortly after mom’s arrival, they were married.

In addition to raising two children, and keeping our dad in line, Dora made time to volunteer. She was honoured as Citizen of the Year (Georgetown 1967), was a member of the Red Cross Ontario Division Services for Seniors committee, was President of the Georgetown chapter of the Red Cross and received the Red Cross Distinguished Service Award at a ceremony in Ottawa in 1980. She was also a member of the Choir and the Catholic Women’s league at Holy Cross Parish in Georgetown and sat on the Boards of Directors of the Georgetown Public Library and the Cedarvale Community Centre. She continued her volunteer work when the family moved to Barrie in 1972. She volunteered as Front of House Manager for the Gryphon Theatre while juggling a full-time career as a Real Estate Agent with Blue Jay Realty. She was also an entrepreneur, co-owner of the wine store, Grape & Hop Shoppe, with Dad.

All along the way she cultivated a great many friends, and her kind and tender nature touched the hearts of all whom she met.

Dora will be sadly missed here but will make new friends and be the life of the party behind the pearly gates. No doubt that Buster Poindexter’s Calypso song “Hot Hot Hot” will be playing constantly!

Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 304 Highway 8, Stoney Creek, on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 10:30 a.m.
After the service family, friends and co-workers are invited to a celebration of her life at Amica Retirement Community, 135 King Street East, Stoney Creek.

In the spirit of the way Dora led her life and treated others, in place of flowers she would want everyone to perform a genuine gesture of kindness towards a friend, family or stranger while remembering her.

Arrangements entrusted to SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, STONEY CREEK (905-664-4222).
