MOYER, David Wray
June 7, 1930 - September 21, 2022
Passed away peacefully at the Village of Tansley Woods, September 21, 2022 at the age of 92. For over 63 years, loving husband of the late Clara Miriam “Yvonne” (nee Brown). Cherished father of Sheryn Ricker (Ryan) and Andrew Moyer (Monica Pozzolo). Proud grandfather of Josiah Ricker, Liesel Knight-Messenger (Stephen), Matthias Ricker, Nathaniel Ricker and Isabella Moyer. Dear brother of Joan Moyer and James (Jim) Moyer (Beth) as well as sister-in-law Ellen Moyer. Predeceased by brothers Carson and Blake Moyer and sister-in-law Eleanor Moyer. David will also be fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins and long-time friends in Kitchener/Waterloo, Burlington/Oakville, Sarnia and Midland, Michigan.
Born in Kitchener, Ontario to Menno Moyer and Maggie Snyder, the lessons of faith, hard work, devotion to family and service to community that he learned on the farm were hallmarks throughout his life. David graduated from McMaster University with a BComm in 1960. After obtaining his CA designation, David went on to enjoy a fulfilling 30-year career in corporate tax with Dow Chemical in both Sarnia, Ontario, and Midland, Michigan. A quiet man with a ready sense of humour, David was a person whose counsel was sought by family, friends, and colleagues. He was especially honoured to be called in for round-table discussions with former Finance Minister Michael Wilson and to be elected to the Tax Executive Institute. He willingly served maintaining facilities and helping oversee finances in each church he attended, especially Central Baptist, Sarnia. Happiest when he was making things and helping people, David’s legendary woodworking skills produced substantial pieces of furniture, including several grandmother and grandfather clocks, as well as whimsical items such as carved ducks and Welsh love spoons. In retirement, David was heavily involved with Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton where he took on roles from general labourer to Treasurer with humility and dedication. He also volunteered to assist with income tax preparation for those on fixed income, including parents of young children and seniors, treating clients with grace, respect, and a pocket full of candy. With Yvonne, David happily hosted family and friends at their off-the-grid cottage on the Maitland River, where he loved to tinker, grill on the outdoor wood fire, and maintain the tree farm.
Special thanks to the team at The Village of Tansley Woods Retirement for their kindness, compassion, and excellent care. Private Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life for both David and Yvonne will take place at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME (1167 Guelph Line, BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333) on Saturday October 8, 2022 with visitation beginning at 12noon until the service at 1pm in the funeral home chapel, Rev. John R. Torrance officiating. An on-site reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton or a charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
